A rough day yesterday

I got my redundancy notice from work yesterday and even though I was expecting it, it still made for a rough day. I’m being laid off because the current funding for my job finishes at the end of June and we don’t currently have any new funding. Ahh the joy’s of working in the Not-For-Profit sector and being dependent on external funders. So like I say I’ve known that this would happen for some time but it was definitely easier to deal with in the abstract. No news yet on the position I interviewed for.

Now onto much happier topics – the weekend in Glasgow. We got the train up from York on Friday night, so we didn’t get in till late and just went straight to the hotel. Saturday we just planned on pottering round the city centre and chilling out, so we mooched down round Buchanan Street and the Merchant City area to see the changes that have taken place. I spent my teenage years living near Glasgow and have only visited sporadically since my parents moved away eleven years ago and the city has changed out of all recognition. I didn’t buy anything there but I did have a good browse round VV Rouleaux and drooled over their ribbons. After lunch we went for a browse round the Lighthouse, an art and design centre converted from one of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s early buildings for the Herald newspapers. We climbed to the top of the tower which give a very different view of the city. Saturday night we treated ourselves to a meal in the ‘fine dinning room’ at the ArtHouse which was absolutely scrummy.

After breakfast on Sunday we headed out to Pollok Park to visit the Burrell Collection, in particular the small exhibition of seventeenth century samplers that is on at the moment. The Burrell has an amazing collection of needlework but usually only a small selection is on display, the exhibition had some gorgeous pieces in it; in particular some of the whitework samplers. After I had finished communing with the samplers, the sun had come out so we went for a walk round the park. What we hadn’t realised when we decided to go to Pollok was that there was a joint Blue Peter/Guide dogs event on, Bark in the Park I think that we were about the only people there who weren’t walking a dog and I don’t recall having ever seen the park that busy LOL! The only downside was that the Highland Cattle had been moved well away from the dogs so we didn’t get to see them. Sunday evening I met up with Paula for a mini gtg and I got to see the gorgeous needleroll she received from Anne as well has her finished Love Letters and Beekeeper needlecase and to have a good natter :)

So sorry about the lay off, Karoline. I've been laid off before and even tho I knew it was coming, it still feels like a rejection. We'll hope for better things ahead!

Bad news about getting laid off. I figured there was something coming with your interview. You should follow up with them in a couple of days and see what they thought. :)

Glad to hear that you had a nice weekend in Glasgow and got to meet up with Paula, as well. Double bonus!
